OutTheDoorCalc answers one question honestly: what will this vehicle actually cost, out the door? The advertised price of a car is never the final price — sales or excise tax, title, registration, plate and dealer fees sit on top, and every state computes them differently.
How we build each calculator
- Official sources only. Every figure comes from the state's own published schedules — its tax commission or department of revenue, its DMV, and its statutes. Not from other calculators.
- Checked dates on every page. Each state page prints the date its rates were last verified, and we re-check schedules on a rolling basis (county tax tables are re-pulled when states publish new ones).
- The math is shown. Results are itemized line by line — the same lines you'll see at the dealer or the DMV counter — so you can spot a wrong line on a buyer's order.
- When a figure isn't published, we say so. A few local fees vary by county office and aren't published statewide. We flag those instead of inventing a number.
Independence
OutTheDoorCalc is an independent website. It is not a government website and is not affiliated with any state DMV, tax commission, or department of revenue. Calculator results are estimates for planning purposes; the collecting office in your state sets the final amount.
Contact
Spotted a fee that changed in your state, or a line that doesn't match your paperwork? We want to know — corrections from readers are how the schedules stay honest. A contact form is being added during our launch period; every correction is verified against the official schedule before anything on the site changes.
