How Florida vehicle sales tax works
Florida charges a 6% state sales tax on the full taxable price of a vehicle — plus a county discretionary surtax (0% to 2%, depending on your county) that by law applies only to the first $5,000 of the price (F.S. 212.054). That cap is the single most-missed rule in Florida car tax: on an expensive car, your effective tax rate is much closer to 6% than to the combined rate a dealer may quote.
- Your county is your residence county — the address on the title and registration — not the county where the dealership sits.
- Dealer sales: your trade-in allowance is deducted from the taxable price. Dealer doc, prep, settlement and closing fees are added to the taxable price (they are taxable), and Florida law sets no cap on them.
- Private-party sales: there is normally no trade-in deduction — tax is due on the full purchase price, collected by the Tax Collector when you title the vehicle. Florida has no Texas-style presumptive-value rule; the price you actually paid is the basis.
- The $225 surprise: if you have no Florida plate (or plate record in your name) to transfer to the vehicle, the state charges a one-time $225 initial registration fee (F.S. 320.072). Transferring a plate avoids it — and avoids the $28 new-plate fee too. Motorcycles never pay it.
- No EV fee: Florida charges no extra registration fee for electric or hybrid vehicles (checked October 2026).
Worked example — new car, Miami-Dade County, no plate to transfer.
$30,000 car, no trade-in, standard car weight class. State tax: $30,000 × 6% = $1,800. County surtax: 1% × first $5,000 only = $50. Total tax $1,850 (a naive flat 7% would wrongly say $2,100). Title $77.25; registration $46.10; initial registration fee $225; new plate $28. Total taxes & fees: $2,226.35 — estimated out-the-door total: $32,226.35.
Worked example — dealer purchase with a trade-in, Miami-Dade.
$25,000 car with a $4,000 trade-in: taxable base $21,000. State tax $1,260 + surtax $50 = $1,310 tax. With a Florida title transfer ($75.25), standard registration ($46.10) and a transferred plate, total taxes & fees are $1,431.35 and the estimated out-the-door total is $22,431.35.

Good to know: Florida registrations expire at midnight on the owner's birthday, and Florida has no state safety or emissions inspection fee in the purchase process. At purchase you may also choose to direct up to $105 of the state sales tax you already owe to the Hope Scholarship Program — it changes where your tax goes, not what you pay.
Florida vehicle tax — frequently asked questions
Why is my Florida car tax less than 7% of the price?
Because the county surtax (1% in Miami-Dade) applies only to the first $5,000. On a $30,000 car you pay 6% on everything ($1,800) plus 1% on $5,000 ($50) — $1,850 total, an effective rate of about 6.17%.
Which county's surtax do I pay if I buy in another county?
Your residence county — the address shown on the title and registration — even if the dealership is somewhere else. A Miami-Dade resident buying in Broward still pays the Miami-Dade surtax.
What exactly triggers the $225 initial registration fee?
Registering a vehicle in Florida when you do not have a Florida license plate, or a plate registered in your name, to transfer to it. Moving to Florida with an out-of-state car triggers it; replacing a car and moving your old plate over does not. It is refunded if you dispose of the vehicle and surrender the plate within 3 months.
I'm moving to Florida. What will I pay?
Use tax (Florida's 6% + your new county's capped surtax) with credit for tax you legally paid in the other state, an $85.25 first-Florida title, registration for your weight class, the $225 initial fee, and $28 for a plate — unless you qualify for an exemption. Select "First Florida title" in the calculator for the title side.
Does a trade-in lower private-party tax in Florida?
Normally no. Between individuals, an allowance exists only when a vehicle, boat, aircraft or mobile home is itself traded in the same transaction. In an ordinary cash private sale, tax is due on the full purchase price.
How much is the dealer doc fee in Florida?
Whatever the dealer sets — Florida law does not cap it. The fee must be included in the advertised price, it carries a statutory disclosure, and unlike in some states it is taxable: it is added to the price before the 6% and the capped surtax are computed.
Is there an EV or hybrid fee in Florida?
No. As of October 2026, Florida charges no additional fee for electric or hybrid vehicles — they pay the standard weight-based registration, unlike Texas ($200/yr) or California.
What happens if I register late?
Delinquent registration fees are set by F.S. 320.07 — $5 to $250 depending on your license tax — and a late title transfer adds a $20 late title fee. Registration renewals run to midnight on the owner's birthday.
Do I pay documentary stamp tax on a car purchase?
No — Florida's documentary stamp tax applies to real-estate documents and certain written obligations, not to the vehicle purchase itself at the Tax Collector.
How much tax on a $30,000 car in Florida?
$1,800 of state tax, plus the county surtax on the first $5,000 only: $0 in Citrus and Collier (total $1,800), $50 at 1% in counties like Miami-Dade and Broward (total $1,850), $75 at 1.5% (total $1,875), and $100 in Hamilton County at 2% (total $1,900). Title, plate and registration come on top — run the calculator for the full out-the-door figure.
Can I register a Florida car for two years?
Yes — Florida offers a biennial registration at exactly twice the annual amount for your weight class (for example, $92.20 instead of $46.10 for most cars). The sales tax and title fees at purchase are unchanged.
Do I need a VIN verification in Florida?
If the vehicle is being titled in Florida for the first time and comes from out of state, yes — the VIN must be verified on Form HSMV 82042 by a law-enforcement officer, notary, licensed dealer or DMV inspector before the Tax Collector can title it.

Every figure on this page comes from an official Florida source, checked on October 9, 2026: FLHSMV's fee schedules and registration guidance; the Department of Revenue's GT-800030 (sales tax on motor vehicles) and DR-15DSS surtax tables for calendar year 2026; and Florida Statutes §212.054 (surtax cap), §320.072 (initial fee) and §320.08 (registration classes). Surtax rates change only on January 1, and we re-check them every January. OutTheDoorCalc is independent and is not affiliated with FLHSMV or any Tax Collector.
