Oklahoma Vehicle Excise Tax, Tag & Title Calculator
Oklahoma does it differently: instead of one sales tax you pay a 3.25% excise tax on the full price — trade-ins don't reduce it — plus a 1.25% sales tax on the price after trade-in. This calculator keeps the two taxes on their two different bases, adds tag, title and EV fees, and ends with your estimated out-the-door total.

How Oklahoma vehicle tax works — two taxes, two different bases
Oklahoma has no ordinary sales tax on cars. In its place, at titling you pay:
Vehicle excise tax (68 O.S. §2103) — for a vehicle getting its first Oklahoma title: 3.25% of the full purchase price. For every later transfer: $20 on the first $1,500 of value, plus 3.25% of the rest. By law (§2104) this tax is figured on the price before any trade-in credit or discount — a trade-in never reduces it. The excise tax is rounded to the nearest dollar.
State sales tax of 1.25% — layered on top since 2017. Since November 1, 2023 (SB 984), this one is figured on the price minus your trade-in. No city or county sales tax is collected on vehicle purchases.
So the famous "4.5% Oklahoma car tax" is only the whole story with no trade-in. With a trade-in, your effective rate lands between 3.25% and 4.5% — and any calculator that applies 4.5% to the post-trade-in price is understating your excise tax.
Used-car valuation: there is no age-bracket value table in current law — the tax rests on the actual sales price. (A rule requiring the price to sit within 20% of NADA book value was repealed effective July 1, 2026.) The $20 first bracket also means a cheap used car pays a $20 minimum excise tax.
Worked example — new car with a trade-in.
$35,000 new car, $10,000 trade-in. Excise tax: 3.25% × $35,000 (full price) = $1,137.50 → $1,138. Sales tax: 1.25% × ($35,000 − $10,000) = $312.50. Title $11 + tag, 1st year $96 + insurance fee $1.50. Total tag, title & tax: $1,559.00 — estimated out-the-door total: $26,559.00.
Worked example — used car, no trade-in.
$12,000 used car in its 6th registration year. Excise tax: $20 + 3.25% × ($12,000 − $1,500) = $361 (not $390 — the first-$1,500 bracket helps you). Sales tax: 1.25% × $12,000 = $150. Title $11 + tag $86 + insurance fee $1.50. Total: $609.50 — total cost: $12,609.50.

Deadlines: for purchases on or after November 1, 2023, you have two months from the purchase date to title and register before penalties accrue. A dealer paper tag is valid only 10 days — your metal plate arrives by mail under the pre-registration system. Late penalties run $1 per day (excise penalty capped at the tax; registration penalty capped at $100). A per-tire waste tire fee also applies the first time a vehicle is registered in Oklahoma; it varies by tire size and is not included in this calculator's total.
What to bring to Service Oklahoma / your licensed operator
The signed title (or manufacturer's certificate of origin for a new vehicle)
A bill of sale showing the actual purchase price — Oklahoma records tire count and rim sizes on it for the first-registration tire fee
Photo ID and your Oklahoma insurance verification
For a vehicle from out of state: it will need a VIN inspection ($4)
Payment for the taxes and fees above — and remember the two-month deadline from your purchase date
Oklahoma vehicle tax — frequently asked questions
Why does Oklahoma show two taxes instead of one sales tax?
History. The excise tax (68 O.S. §2103) has always been collected in lieu of sales tax at titling. In 2017 the legislature partially repealed the vehicle sales-tax exemption, adding a 1.25% state sales tax on top. No local (city/county) sales tax is collected on vehicles.
How much excise tax on a $20,000 used car?
$20 on the first $1,500 + 3.25% of the remaining $18,500 = $621.25 → $621, plus 1.25% sales tax ($250 with no trade-in). A new car at the same price pays a flat 3.25% = $650 excise.
My trade-in is worth more than the car I'm buying. What happens?
The 1.25% sales tax drops to zero (it can't go below the price difference of $0), but the excise tax is still due on the full purchase price of the vehicle you're titling.
Are family transfers taxed in Oklahoma?
Several transfers are exempt from the excise tax with the right form — gifts between spouses or from parent to child (Form 794, must be a genuine gift), inheritances, divorce-decree transfers, and transfers to your own revocable trust, among others. Service Oklahoma lists the full exemption rules.
Can I get a two-year registration?
Yes — Oklahoma offers one- or two-year registration; two years costs twice the annual tag and insurance fees. This calculator shows the one-year purchase-time figures.
Do tribal citizens use this fee schedule?
Not necessarily. Oklahoma processes tribal registrations under tribal–state compacts, and eligible tribal citizens may register through their tribe instead of the state schedule. Tribal fee schedules aren't published in the state sources we use, so this calculator models state registrations.
I'm buying from a private seller. How do I drive it home?
Oklahoma allows a buyer to drive a newly purchased vehicle without a tag for a short window (15 days per Service Oklahoma reporting) with the bill of sale in the vehicle — but you still have the two-month deadline to title, register and pay the taxes.
What about the tire fee I heard about?
A waste tire recycling fee is charged per tire — based on rim size — the first time a vehicle is registered in Oklahoma. That's why the bill of sale records tire count and rim sizes. Current per-tire amounts aren't published on Service Oklahoma's fee schedule, so we don't include an estimate rather than guess.
How much tax on a $30,000 car in Oklahoma?
New (first Oklahoma title): $975 excise + $375 sales tax = $1,350 with no trade-in. Used: the excise drops to $946 ($20 + 3.25% of $28,500) while the sales tax stays $375, for $1,321 total. Tag, title and the $1.50 insurance fee come on top.
What does an Oklahoma tag renewal cost?
Your bracket fee by registration year — $96 down to $26 for cars, $3 more for motorcycles — plus the $1.50 insurance verification fee, and the EV or plug-in hybrid fee if yours has one. Renewals get a one-month grace period before the $1/day penalty starts.
Is the dealer doc fee capped in Oklahoma?
No. Oklahoma rules regulate how dealers may describe the fee — they can't claim it's required by law — but no statute caps the amount. It is negotiable, like the car's price.
